Swanndri Story

swan

The Swanndri – New Zealand’s gift to the world!  The ubiquitous woolen shirt favoured by farmers, hunters and increasingly, everybody else.

Here at First Scene our Productions Department holds an impressive collection of the beloved shirts. Our swannys have appeared in tv shows, movies, theatre productions and commercials – they’ve become a kind of visual shorthand for “New Zealand bloke”.

How, we wondered, did this humble bush shirt achieve it’s iconic status? This week we decided to find out!

william broome
William Broome, dapper in a 3 piece suit, was not really a swanny kinda guy himself.

It all began in New Plymouth, when English born tailor, William Broome, realised that there was a need for a hard wearing, warm and weather-proof garment – the sort of thing that a man could chuck on over his work clothes.

The original shirt was designed by Broome and registered along with the familiar swan-in-circle logo in 1913. Swanddri? Like water off a swans back apparently  – and it sounds better than Duckdri!

Production happened upstairs at Broome’s shop, The Palatine, where heavy woolen cloth was cut and sewn into oversized olive-green, collarless shirts, with short sleeves and a long-hanging back. The shirts were then sent out to the family home for water-proofing.

The shirts were immersed in Broome’s secret water-proofing formula for 2 days, in long concrete tubs. They were pegged out on the line to dry by William’s wife Ivy, and eventually parcelled up and sent off to the post office with Broome grandson Bob Bowler on his bicycle.

fortunes and formulas

Shirts were sold for many years as ‘one size fits all’, due to the maker’s inability to predict which size the shirts would shrink to after their dip in the formula.  “They didn’t always shrink to the same size,” Bob Bowler says. “So he couldn’t cut to fit, as it were.”¹

While the secret formula remained a secret, there is some evidence to suggest that it may have been inspired by a waterproofing recipe found in a book called “Fortunes in Formulas”, which lived in the Broome family bookcase, and had come with William from his Staffordshire birthplace.

Innovations such as the hood, long sleeves and lacing at the neck were added in the late 1920s by fellow tailor John McKendrick, who eventually acquired the rights to produce Swanndri in 1955. He bought the business outright from the Broome family in 1964.

Operating as John Mack Ltd out of his Waitara factory, McKendrick introduced pre-shrunk fabric for Swanndris. The garments were more wearer-friendly and could be made in different sizes and styles.

As well as the original shirt in NZ-bush Olive, Swanndri classics such as The Rover and The Ranger appeared, in a brightly coloured range of checks and plaids.

The new material was sourced from Alliance Textiles of Timaru and in 1991 when McKendrick retired, he sold them the business. All production moved to Canterbury and Swanndri had left Taranaki for good.

Over the next 20-years the Swanndri range took a few interesting turns, including 3 collections designed by Karen Walker.

swankaren

A few short years later and Swanndri changed hands again, this time with production moving to China under the auspices of Swanndri NZ . Thus the iconic kiwi shirt can no longer claim to be be Made in New Zealand.

Although the range has expanded to include women, children and even dogs, the original bush shirt is still the company’s core business.

Today Swanndri is still doing what William Broome designed it to do over 100 years ago – keep us warm and dry while we go about our work!

God save the Queen’s birthday …

So you’ve been invited to a Queen’s Birthday Weekend costume party – but what to wear?!  Stay calm – here at First Scene we have taken a moment to put together a little list of some Queen-themed costumes to help you along.

You could do a lot worse than look to the lady herself! A good 90 years in the public eye means there are plenty of Queen Elizabeths for you to choose from.

But Elizabeth ain’t the only Queen on the block, how about the other Elizabeth, or Queen Victoria, or the Queen Mother?

And closer to home we have our own queens to honour, the late Maori Queen Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu, Queen Salote of Tonga and of course local Beauty Queen Lorraine Downes.

Who says you have to be an earth queen?

amidala

And while we are in Space, why not dress up as the evil, masked Queen Yllana in 1958 cult classic The Queen of Outer Space?  If masks aren’t your thing you could dress as Taleeah, the Venusian scientist with the mysterious Hungarian accent, played by the ever-wonderful Zsa Zsa Gabor in a series of leg-splitty dresses that Angelina Jolie would be proud of.

(An interesting side note here is that many of the costumes for The Queen of Outer Space, were recycled from seminal, 1956 sci-fi feature The Forbidden Planet.)

Remembering Ian Watkin ..

Ian Watkin passed away this week at age 76. The character actor and writer was a giant of the New Zealand screen big and small, and here at BehindTheFirstScene we revisit some of his most memorable characters.

Pukemanu-Gallery-8.jpg.540x405

Dr Rhyder of ground breaking drama “Pukemanu”. Set in a small North Island timber town, it was our first taste of seeing and hearing actors talk in their own (our own!) accents. But fellow cast mate Bruno Lawrence was cooking up something new, something crazy, and Watkin went along for the ride …

Bruno Lawrence Electric Revelation and Travelling Apparition or BLERTA.
A mad mix of musicians, actors, dancers and film makers who took their art directly to the people! Travelling for 4 years around NZ and Australia on a 1948 Leyland Tiger bus, the mayhem and magic led to a TV One commissioned show “Blerta” – watch the excellent documentary about it here – wild times!

Appearances in “Goodbye Pork Pie”, “Utu”and “Radio Times” kept him busy, but for many he was the hapless train guard in the epic 1975 Crunchie commercial – an iconic ad which ran for a record breaking 20 years.

In 1977 he teamed up with Bruno Lawrence and Geoff Murphy once more for “Wild Man”. Read the story about the making of the film here.

In 1977 he also managed to appear in Roger Donaldson thriller “Sleeping Dogs” playing Bullen, wife-stealer, turned guerilla revolutionary.

But perhaps he is most well known for his role as the avaricious Uncle Les in 1992 gory horror “Braindead” A cult classic and the beginning of young Peter Jackson’s career on the international stage.

To look back on the work of Ian Watkin is to take a tour of New Zealand film and television.

Thanks Mr Watkin for all your great work!

Dear Reader, an earlier version of this story incorrectly named Ian Watkin’s first appearance on NZ television as being in the the gritty drama “Pukehama”. It was in fact “Pukemanu”.

May the Fourth be with you!

It was May 4th 1979, and Darth …er… Margaret Thatcher had just taken office as Prime Minister of Great Britain. The Conservative Party took out a half page ad to congratulate her, “May the Fourth be with you Maggie, Congratulations”

Almost 40 years later and the Conservatives’ pun on the Star War’s catch phrase “May the Force be with you” has been taken up by legions of fans worldwide, turning May 4th into a global day of Star Wars celebration.

But what to do on the big day? Here are a few suggestions from the team at First Scene!

  • Dress up as your favourite character! Come down and see us at First Scene! We have a huge range of characters to suit every size and preference.

  • Impress your friends and work-mates you will – by spending all day Wednesday talking like Yoda! If annoyed they become, simply use your Jedi mind control powers to convince them that you are not the aggravating nerd they are looking for.

  • Organise a movie marathon of the entire series at home!

Chewbacca welcomed home by wife Malla, watched over by his dad, Itchy. Really.
  • Now. We hesitate to recommend this one – but you could watch the Star Wars Holiday Special. A film so awful that George Lucas reportedly cried “If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.” Be warned – once seen it can never be unseen!
  • Rope in a friend who owes you a favour and stage a lightsaber fight outside your child’s daycare to impress them!

fs team

  • And last but not least – come and see us at First Scene and get dressed up as your favourite character … what? … we already suggested that one? …huh …well … um … a second mention never hurt anyone!

Happy Star Wars Day … and May the Fourth be with you!

Red cotton drill and gold crepe-back satin form the basis of the simple cross-over gown. More red cotton is painstakingly cut into a rampant lion sigil and hand tacked to the side panels in blue thread. “Blue thread?” I ask. Yes – so that the stitches are easy to see for removal after machine sewing the delicate pieces to the dress. Yikes! Heraldry is not dead!
